How to makea product launch video.

Turn your screens into a 30-second video for launch day and Product Hunt, in six steps.

What you’ll build

A 30-second landscape launch video in four moments: a hook, what your product is, three highlights, and a call to action.

What you’ll use

  • Screenshots or a screen recording of your productComing soon to Chrome
  • An idea for your hook, and your product’s name and logo
  • A YouTube account, to put the video on Product Hunt
  • A video editor. This guide shows Dranic, which runs in Chrome or Edge on a computer

The storyboard

Most launch videos follow roughly this shape. Use it as a starting point and let your story set the pace.

  1. 0–3 sThe hookWhatever makes people stop: what changes for them, a bold line, or your product’s best moment.
  2. 3–8 sWhat it isYour product’s name and what it does, in one sentence.
  3. 8–26 sThree highlightsThe three things people will love, each shown working, with a few words at most.
  4. 26–30 sThe call to actionWhere to try it today, with your name and logo on screen.
  1. Plan your launch story

Open on the hook. People decide in the first few seconds whether to keep watching, so lead with what changes for them, not with your feature list. A hook can be a line, a striking shot of your product, or a result they’ll want.

Then pick three highlights that build on each other, and show them rather than describe them. Keep the first moments quick; once people are watching, you can slow down.

  2. Start from something close

Swapping your screens and words into a finished video is faster than starting from a blank timeline.

  3. Open on the hook and say what it is

Open on the hook, then say your product’s name and what it does in one sentence. If someone stops watching after five seconds, they should still know what you built and whose it is.

Launch day is when many people meet your brand for the first time, so use your colours, logo and type from the first frame.

  4. Show your three highlights

Give each highlight its own moment, and let the product do the talking. A click that does something says more than a still screen with a paragraph over it. Use a few words only to point at what matters.

  5. End on the call to action

Finish on one place to try it today: your site, a free trial or your Product Hunt page. One next step works better than three.

  6. Export and launch

Watch it once without stopping and trim anything that drags. A launch video only has a few seconds of anyone’s attention, so shorter almost always wins.

Post the MP4 everywhere you announce: X, LinkedIn and your site. For Product Hunt, upload it to YouTube and paste the link into your launch.
